The Mann Landers Column: Dogs vs. Pussies →

Dear Mann Landers,

I’ve been crushing on a girl for a long time. Never made a move because I never felt she was interested. We still hung out a fair bit after I came to terms with residing on her friend ladder. Turns out I was wrong, she was interested. I’ve now been labelled a pussy for not…

Heroes

Ok, so what do Superman, Spiderman and Batman & Robin all have in common? (besides the extreamly tight and rather questionable costumes) They’re all hero’s to our generation. A symbol of whats right & just within our world. What does this have to do with anything you ask? Well i would like for you to consider this hero Private Damien Thomlinson. Private Damien had his legs blown off in a roadside bomb. Why am i asking you to consider this man? He does fight crime in flashy outfits or have superpowers, hell he doesnt even drive a pimped out car with rockets! I’m asking you to consider this man because he embodies the traits in which your children can look up to as a hero, ‘honour’, ‘courage’ & ‘mateship’. The guys he fights with dont wear lycra they wear camo, they dont have superpowers or side kicks, they have eachother. This man embodies everything you need in a hero. After the man lost his legs in a roadside bombing in which his mates pulled him, barley recognisable, from the wreckage of the vehicle they manage to get him to saftey while taking fire (if that isnt a perfect display of honur, courage and mateship i dnt know what is!) , in the hours and days afterwards Private thomlinson suprised doctors by living and then went on to complete rehab in just a few weeks in order to be able to walk onto the runway to greet his mates who saved his life, again another fine example of honour, courage and mateship. Something which i think embodies the Australian spirit and those ideals and values are things i want my children to learn and something i will certainly be teaching mine (at the point in time when i have children). Dont get me wrong i think having fictional characters as hero’s is great i just think these are the stories our children should be hearing. While having your child say “when i grow up i want to be superman” is cute when their 5, but if your child is 25 and runing around with red undies on the outside you have a BIG problem! All jokes aside i agree fictional characters like Superman teach our children right from wrong at a young age however i think there is a lack of genuine hero’s for our teens. All we teens have for the majority are people like the Kardashians and sporting stars who spend 1 week on the field and 3 in rehab (or vice versa). All im saying is that our war hero’s arnt the worst place to look for genuine hero’s, it might even help restore some national pride and reduce the numbers of lad’s (i really dont like lads, complete waste of a person). just a thought on todays society, if it appeals to you thank you, if not, well i tried. Enjoy & take care xx “A hero is no braver than an ordinary man, but he is brave five minutes longer.” for the full story on Private Damien Thimlinson visit http://sixtyminutes.ninemsn.com.au/stories/7944022/a-real-fighter

The internet, friends & why they work

So i guess the first thing i really wanna write about is the misconceptions people have about social mediums like facebook, twitter and myspace, and to a furthur extent online gamers.

While people will say that Gen Y has lost its social skills because we spend all the spare time we have on computers on “social sites” or gaming, but i beg to differ! Im really happy about recent studies that have proven that things can actually help our generation when it comes to social interaction and i guess i’d like to put forward a few examples of why i think its a relevant argument, well for me anyway.

So i guess the 1st thing that i find things like facebook useful for is keeping in contact with childhood friends. Nick laurie this is your shout out buddy! Nick was one of my closest childhood friends who sadly moved away, not heaps far away but far enough that my phone bill would be significantly higher if i had to call him to chat. facebook allows me to keep in contact with the kid i spent most of my childhood creating memories with.

Now i know it can be odd for parents to think that we go to school see our friends all day then come home, jump straight onto msn and facebook (yes we need both open at the same time, dont argue just accept) and talk for hours then text all night but thats how we do it, with our new day and age we have these things so that we can keep in contact with our friends so why not use them?

now another reason why these social sites are so good (and partly why they were set up) is that your able to re-connect with past school friends, Lauren this would be you, and catch up with how they have been and how they have turned out as a person. The last time i saw lauren was in year 6 when we graduated untill lastyear when we re-connected on facebook. Now i’ll be honest untill i started talking to lauren again i didn’t have the greatest view of johavah’s witness people, i may have made a few jokes on their behalf but since i’ve started talking to lauren again, and i hate admitting im wrong to lauren but it seems to be a more occuring thing with her these days, i’ve realised they arn’t just some weird cult they are actually really nice people.

So not only has a site like facebook allowed me to re-connect with a primary school friend but it has changed the way i view people and their religions, obviously facebook didnt directly do this but it helped,  and now i have a really good friend who i still like to tease about the fact she’s a witness (but lovingly tease).

Now the other half of why “social sites” were created, to keep in touch with overseas friends, hello lizzie this would be you, I met lizzie while i was overseas on a hockey tour but i didnt really get to know her while i was over there (definatly a mistake) but now through “social sites” like facebook i’ve been able to get to know an amazing person who i could have a friendship with for a very long time. It would be pointless for me to text lizzie so the medium of facebook allows me to maintain my friendship with lizzie, it also allows me to share photos and things that happen faster then sending a letter. So having facebook allowed me to meet and keep in contact with someone who lives in the USA and now i have a cool new friend because of it.

Now before i go i should maybe explain why i keep using ” around social site. While i’ve just given all these reason why the internet actually helps with being social sites (basically i just wanted to point out i have amazing friends thanks to facebook) alot of the social bits on facebook revolves around 3 things, they’re what i call the 3 add’s. 3 reasons why you get added on facebook

1) “your DP is hot, wanna root?”

2) “There were 2 people in your DP and i wanted to see if you were the hot one”

3) “i think i know you/i know you”

you dont actually write reason’s 1 or 2 (or maybe you do) but there usually the reasons, so i use the ” because only 1/3 is really socal the other 2/3 is effectivly trying to get ur end in via the net.

thank you for taking the time to read this, if you liked it feel free to follow if not then suck shit you just read this entire thing there was an exit button.

once again to all my amazing friends there is more then i named but your all amazing, thats why im still friends with you.

take care xx
